Actually, Photoshop is a big part of that answer. That particular one is a composite, which isn’t really in the spirit of the post. The star trails are from somewhere – who knows – but you cannot simultaneously expose for that amount of time and also freeze the clouds. Clouds are moving way faster than the stars and just look like haze with a long exposure, not to mention obscuring the stars. In addition, you’ll notice the stars on the left are spinning on a different orbit than those on the right near the north pole. Nice and surreal, but definitely not real. IMHO, night photography is wild enough without the tinkering, but it is a nice image all the same.
